Primary 1 Maths Singapore

Primary 1 Maths Singapore

Singapore ranks in the top list when it comes to education and there is no doubt about schooling. It is quite comprehensive and well planned but often categorized as very stressful.

Other day, I was reading in one of the parent support groups about the Primary 1 maths question which has sparks discussion around the difficulty and creativity when it comes to understanding and scoring in Singapore.

As a mom of 2 primary going kids in primary 1 and primary 6 respectively, I find that it is not pretty straight forward in the schools.

This picture was shared by Siying Tan about her niece who is studying in Primary 1.

She has mentioned that most of the people will think that her niece didn’t even know how to count such a simple thing but if you look at the creative side of this question than her niece is absolutely right also.

Look at the picture and what do you think about her answers.

Ideally, If I look at the picture then the little girl is not incorrect with her answers since she is more on the creative side looking at that particular duck and dog while writing her answer.

As a parent, I know how we teach our little one and make them learn counting by looking at the pictures or come out with something creative so that they have curiosity and interest to learn mathematics and won’t consider it as a difficult or boring subject.

Why is it out of the box and creative thinking is always associated with not following the instructions or rules. Kids are way too creative and expressive these days when it comes to thinking. I totally feel it is such a good way for them to learn and be innovative while thinking from a different view than just what others look.

Realistically everyone has pointed out in this discussion that creativity comes only after the kids know their basics and without a proper understanding of the basics, they won’t be able to learn anything in the future.

Every discussion is like two sides of the coins and no one is right or wrong.
