5 tips to raise emotionally healthy children

Parenting especially of smaller children is a full-time job and to teach them values, connect with them to raise emotionally healthy children is not an easy task these days. Every day we see them learning and picking up something new it could be good or bad but as a parent, it is our responsibility to guide them so that they can differentiate what is good for them. Just sharing 5 tips to raise emotionally healthy children.

  1. Connect with your kids

I feel that the most important thing as a parent we can do is to always communicate with our kids and try to minimise the communication gap. We need to understand that our world and our little one’s world is different, every little thing excites them which they want to explore. Let’s get down to their level and start enjoying the things their way. This will not only help us connect with our kids better but we will also have the common topics to talk about too.

2. Highlight their strengths

This is one thing where most of the parents fail as we love to highlight and keep reminding our kids about where they lack rather than highlighting their strength. Kids start losing the confidence in them thinking that they don’t have anything to feel proud of themselves!

Next time just take a note of the things your child is best at doing and praise them for doing it so well. Our son is very much inclined towards science and now he loves photography too. All the kids won’t have the same kind of interest to learn but as a parent, we should provide them with the support and a listening ear.

3. Provide them support

Kids are kids and at times they are upset or uncooperative but do not assume they are difficult to handle. Sometimes it may happen that you child refuses to carry on with a new activity or hobby; it could be that they are not ready at the moment to learn it. They might feel that not able to accomplish something make him/her feel like giving up. Always guide them and give them some time to make up their mind. A little encouragement will help to cultivate in children the attitude of not giving up.

When our son was around 4 years old we tried to engage him in various sports activities like football, swimming and he attended some of the classes but was not showing any excitement attending it. We decided to give it a break rather than going ahead. We sat down and spoke to him about his interest and he mentioned that he doesn’t like this sport. In few months he showed the interest to start riding a bicycle, skating, and wave board and to our surprise, he mastered all of them in a short span of time because he loved these activities.

4.  Strong foundation in values

Children need a firm guide when learning values. One rule, we always follow is that Parents should be consistent in whatever they say or do as kids lead by example. “Parents should speak the same language” rather than taking a side as this way other parent is proved wrong which is not something they value in their life. Strong values will guide children in responding positively when they meet with challenges in life. Every family is different and see what works out better for your family.

Don’t let your kids down as it is easier to scold them and advise them thinking our job is done! We don’t realise that scolding will not help them in a long run and what kind of an impact it will leave on our kids.

5.  Unconditional love

As a parent, our days are as busy as our kids and after a tiring day at work, it is always easier to get busy with our phones or TV than to listen how our kids have spent their day?

Whether we realise or not but our children thrive for attention. If we can pay attention to those small little things they do, it means a world to them.

I might not be the best parent but I always try to engage with them in all the family activities or things they like doing even if it sounds silly for us but for them, it is all love.

  1. Okay this is so important!! Parents in the 90s were so concerned with raising children to feel like they were special, but really, we should be focusing on just helping our children express and feel emotion correctly. I’m in my late 20s and dealing with some ISH right now–would have definitely benefitted from this parenting style

  7. Once kids know that their parents love them unconditionally, lot of things will fall in place. Also, it is important to know their opinions rather than dumping ours on them.

  8. I’ve always believed that EQ is more important than IQ and one way to make sure our children are emotionally healthy is for us – the parents- to be emotionally open and connected to our kids.
